Quijano began his artistic training in 2002 at Studio San Lorenzo under the guidance of Maestro Francisco Negrete, where he developed a strong foundation in classical oil painting techniques. Although he later pursued a professional career outside the arts, painting remained a constant part of his life. In 2017, he made the decision to dedicate himself fully to his artistic practice.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, Quijano creates immersive seascapes that capture both the physical beauty and emotional energy of the sea. His compositions balance realism with expressive movement, inviting viewers to experience the ocean as both a place and a state of mind. Having spent countless hours in and around the water through surfing and sailing, his work reflects a personal connection to the sea that extends beyond observation.
His work has been exhibited in New York, including group exhibitions at the NYC Culture Club at the World Trade Center and MOCANA in SoHo. In 2021, Quijano expanded his artistic experience by working at the renowned Bedi-Makky Art Foundry in New York, where he contributed to the bronze patination of works by Lynda Benglis and other internationally recognized artists, further deepening his understanding of materials, craftsmanship, and monumental art.
Today, Rafael Quijano continues to paint from his studio, creating works that celebrate the timeless dialogue between humanity and the ocean. Through each painting, he seeks to evoke a sense of awe, reflection, and connection with the natural world.
